Read To Me Kits

Hi All –
Just a reminder that you and members can search for these preschool audience kits by putting “Read to me kit” or “Discovery pack” in subject searches. At present, there are over 80 to choose from and each one includes a few books, an AV item, and a “manipulative” (fancy word for educational toy). Members are asked to place holds on no more than 2 at a time. SIRSI, however, does not limit members from placing more holds than 2, so it’s up to us to inform our members when we can. A complete list of these Read To Me Kits in order of theme/concept (like ABCs, Community Helpers, Colors, Counting, Dinosaurs, Number, Senses, etc.) and what each kit contains is on the Children’s Wiki if you care to explore.

And, it is an overview of the ENTIRE planet. Court

Flu Shot Finder

Google Map Mash-up of where to get a shot. Just put a zip code in that search box!

Vocabulary Word: Cyberchondria

"Cyberchondria" means getting overly worried about your health because of trying to diagnose yourself with a search engine. As we know, a search list appears in the order it does because of advertising dollars spent, click-through rates, and other algorithms; "[y]et the research also shows that the vast majority of people have interpreted the ranking of search results as a list of likely ailments, in order of probable diagnoses.

Credit Reports

Michelle Singletary, writing in this Sunday's Washington Post, reminds us that there's one reliable source for free credit reports: www.AnnualCreditReport.com.

In the article ("Underlining the 'Free' in 'Free Credit Report'"), she briefly notes that other sites mislead and add fees. All sites do try to sell related financial services. A patron I helped recently had entered his credit card where another site told him to, paid his dollar, and wanted to know why it hadn't printed on our printer, since he had "paid my dollar for a printout."
