Tax Season

"Pacakge X" a paperback of Virginia tax forms for reference use (or photocopying) has arrived. It's at the Info Desk, on the shelf under the pocket folders (next to circulating CD-ROMs).

We encourage patrons to log on to a PC and file electronically or print forms themseleves. Do help the kinda-scared-of-computers patron get to the forms. We are library folk: not tax folk. Never offer suggestions or guidance on which form to use or what something means.

When people won't log on, go photocopy, or take the IRS or Va. phone number to call for forms -- when people really have a meltdown -- we can print for them. They need to know the form number they need, and they need to know that you will charge them ten cents a page to print. Take the $$ to circ and tell the staffer there that the money is for printing for a patron.

But...as much as possible AVOID printing tax forms for them. If we don't have the actual form they need and if they don't want to photocopy from the Reproducible Forms notebook, and they don't want to call the IRS to have a form sent...then they really need to log on to a computer and print it. We can sit beside them and guide them to the right website and point out the way to print but the point is to get them to choose the form they want THEMSELVES!
